typography scavenger hunt

I’ve been playing around with stadt stempel recently, using clay to make stamps from found objects. Yesterday my four year old and I went on a scavenger hunt to see what we could find. We brought our tools; paper, a stamp pad and a kneaded eraser, and we went looking for letters that we could turn into stamps. We found a bunch of these metal covers on the ground that had a great assortment of letters to make stamps from.

We started by looking for the letters to spell Art, but then we kept going to make Artschmart. There was no S, but luckily we found an old paperclip on the ground and we were able to improvise. This was such a fun project to do with a four year old, because she is just starting to lean all of her letters and she was so excited to try to find them, like a scavenger hunt.

I think this could be a great activity to do with preschoolers, or kids or adults, to see if you could make a whole alphabet using found objects or going for a walk in the neighborhood. Let me know if you try it! We are planning a stadt stempel field trip from Artschmart on August 4th from 10-1, if you would like to try it with us. There is a cemetery near by, which could be perfect!
